Arne Slot insists he has “every reason to believe” that he will still be the Liverpool manager next season amid rumours suggesting that he could be sacked this summer.
The Dutchman guided Liverpool to the Premier League title during his debut campaign at Anfield last year, but the club are currently fourth in the English top flight table and Slot has been heavily criticised in recent months.
The Reds spent a whopping €481.4 million on new signings last summer in a bid to retain their Premier League crown, however they are 20 points behind leaders Arsenal with two league fixtures remaining and they have already lost 11 league matches this term.
Pressure has unsurprisingly heaped on Slot in recent months and the availability of Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso, following his departure from Real Madrid in January, has fuelled rumours that he could be sacked this summer.
However, reports suggest that Liverpool are planning on retaining Slot this summer, with Alonso now in talks over the vacant job at Chelsea.
Arne Slot responds to Liverpool sack rumours
When asked if he knows whether he will still be the Liverpool boss next year on Thursday, Slot replied: “I don’t think I’m deciding that alone. But, I have every reason to believe that I will be the Liverpool manager next season.
“First of all, I am contracted to this club. And second of all, from all the talks we are having. That is my take on it, but as you said, if you don’t have the best season, especially if you compare it with last season, this has definitely not been a great season.
“Then it’s also normal that criticism comes, and I think we’ve all had our share [of criticism]. The players have had their share, the manager’s had his share and other people in the club have had their share. That is how things work nowadays if you don’t win the league.”
