Fans divided after NFL 'chooses Super Bowl rematch between Seahawks and Patriots to open new season'

NFL fans were left split after it emerged that the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will begin the new NFL season with a Super Bowl rematch.

The Seahawks triumphed when the two teams met in Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium back in February. Seven months later, they are set to face off once more. 

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the game will take place at Seattle’s Lumen Field, with the news emerging just hours before the full NFL schedule for the 2026 season is due to be released. 

It is a blockbuster clash between the two best teams from last season but the matchup nevertheless divided fans on social media.

‘NFL said “we’re not easing into the season”… we’re starting with a rematch and maximum chaos,’ one wrote. But others called it a ‘massive miss’ and a ‘big mistake.’

‘[It] feels genuinely insulting that the NFL thought this was a good idea,’ one fan said. ‘This is EASILY the worst outcome,’ another added.

Back in February, the Seahawks triumphed 29-13 in a one-sided game that failed to catch fire. 

Drake Maye broke down in tears after a brutal Super Bowl debut in which the Patriots failed to score a point until the fourth quarter. And many fans fear the Patriots could be in for another difficult day.

‘Is this supposed to be a humiliation ritual for [New England coach] Mike Vrabel, one asked. ‘Seahawks putting belt to a** again.’

Another predicted the ‘Patriots’ will ‘get mugged on national television again,’ while a third joked: ‘Most boring Super Bowl in my life time….. NFL- Let’s run it back!! Really get the season started with a bang.’
