Athletics coach and board member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Olalekan Soetan, has again questioned whether Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan should compete at the upcoming African Athletics Championships in Ghana.
Speaking on the issue, Soetan described the decision as a possible “misplaced priority” for an athlete of Amusan’s stature.

“It may not be the right focus,” he said.
According to the athletics official, Amusan’s attention should remain fixed on bigger global objectives such as the Olympics and World Championships.
“She has already conquered Africa,” he implied.
Soetan stressed that the former world champion and world record holder has little left to prove at continental level.
“The bigger targets matter more,” he noted.
He also argued that the African Championships could serve as an important development platform for younger athletes who need exposure and international experience.
“Young athletes need these opportunities,” he added.
Beyond sporting priorities, Soetan raised concerns about the competition conditions in Ghana, suggesting the venue may not produce fast times for elite sprinters and hurdlers.
“The conditions may not favour top performances,” he stressed.
For him, athlete scheduling must always prioritize long-term performance and career management rather than short-term appearances.
“You have to plan carefully,” he said.
The debate over Amusan’s participation has continued to divide opinion within Nigerian athletics circles.
For Soetan, the message is clear.
Protect elite athletes.
Prioritize global success.
And use continental events strategically.
Because in world athletics, smart planning can be just as important as talent itself.
