An Israeli soldier who was photographed desecrating a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon has reportedly been sentenced to 21 days of military prison, according to Israeli media. The soldier who photographed him was sentenced to 14 days.
A photo of the soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of the Virign Mary’s statue was posted to social media by soldiers last week and garnered widespread condemnation, representing not a standalone incident of the sort. The photo was taken in the southern Lebanese village of Debel during the Israeli invasion of the region.
In April, other soldiers had reportedly been sentenced to 30 days of military prison after photos of them smashing an upside down statue of Jesus in the same Lebanese town was circulated.
