Iran has hanged a man accused of being a spy for the US who allegedly collaborated with the CIA and Mossad, officials have said.
Erfan Shakourzadeh, 29, was reportedly tortured for months after he was convicted by the Iranian regime of helping the US and Israeli intelligence services, Iran‘s judiciary said on Monday.
Erfan, who attended the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran, rejected the charges in a message written before his execution, according to human rights groups.
The post-graduate student was grabbed by authorities in February 2025 who accused him of working with hostile foreign powers.
Norway-based rights groups Iran Human Rights said Erfan had been an “elite student” adding that he was held “in solitary confinement and subjected to torture and forced to give false confessions”.
Another Norwegian rights group, Hengaw, said he had been executed at dawn in the Ghezel Hesar prison outside Tehran after being transferred from the capital’s Evin prison earlier this month.
The group said he had been “a top-ranked master’s student in aerospace engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology”.
He had been “subjected to nine months of severe physical and psychological torture in solitary confinement in order to extract forced confessions” following his arrest, it said.
Iranian officials claimed he had been working on satellite technology and provided details to American and Israeli intelligence “about his workplace, access level, duties, and other sensitive information”.
In a message published by Hengaw and IHR, Shakourzadeh said the accusations were “baseless” and he had been “forced into false confessions” due to torture.
“Do not let another innocent life be lost in silence and without public attention,” he said.
His execution was carried out without prior notice to his family and while he was denied a final visit, Hengaw said.
Efran is the fifth person the regime has executed on spying charges since the start of the war with the US and Israel on February 28.
