Manchester United are wary that hiring Julian Nagelsmann could lead to another Ruben Amorim-type situation as the club closes in on their new manager.
Nagelsmann is understood to be one of the frontrunners to rival Michael Carrick for the full-time job at Old Trafford and initial talks have already been conducted with the Germany manager’s camp to gauge the level of interest.
However, transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed that Nagelsmann’s career has ‘raised alarms’ with other clubs and that United are cautious over hiring another young ‘maverick’ like Amorim without a ‘proven track record’.
“At this stage, they haven’t made a formal approach,” Jacobs told The United Stand
“Intermediaries have contacted him to find out his expectations, things like salary, is he prepared to entertain a club role, and the answer to that last question is yes, but contrary to some reports, it hasn’t moved beyond that yet.”
“I think Manchester United are weighing up, do they want a young manager like Nagelsmann that, much like Ruben Amorim, is actually a bit of a maverick and that gets the best out of players, but he hasn’t got a proven track record of being a project manager, and definitely the manner in which he’s left previous jobs have raised alarms with other clubs that have looked.
Carrick set to beat rivals to permanent Man Utd job after Naglesmann revelation
The development lends further credit to the belief that Carrick will be handed the United job full-time at the end of the season after securing Champions League football for next season.
Carrick has overseen a dramatic turnaround since replacing Amorim and United confirmed their place in the Premier League top five last weekend, with many players also speaking out in support of the 44-year-old being given a permanent role.
Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in November 2024 with a high reputation but the Portuguese coach struggled to string together consistent results and was eventually sacked in January.
Nagelsmann has impressed during stints with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, which led to Bayern Munich hiring the 38-year-old in 2021 but he was sacked after 18 months in charge after a fall-out with the German side’s board.
In spite of the sacking, Nagelsmann had produced positive results for Bayern but the Bundesliga giants were unconvinced by the team’s performances, leading to his sacking and eventual hiring by Germany in September 2023.
