Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, has compared control of the Strait of Hormuz to the power of a nuclear weapon, highlighting the waterway’s global significance.
“The Strait of Hormuz represents an opportunity as precious as an atomic bomb,” Mokhber said.
“Indeed, having in one’s hands a position that allows you to influence the global economy with a single decision is a major opportunity.”
His remarks come as tensions remain high in the strait, a key route for global oil shipments.
Iran has largely restricted non-Iranian shipping through the waterway since the war began following US-Israeli air strikes on 28 February.
