Chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee Pierluigi Collina has warned players and officials that unsporting behaviour will be dealt with strictly at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Reinforcing FIFA’s newly introduced disciplinary measures, Collina confirmed that referees will have the authority to issue red cards for actions considered disrespectful or damaging to the image of the game.

“There will be a tough crackdown,” he said.
According to the legendary Italian referee, players who cover their mouths during on-pitch discussions to avoid lip-reading by cameras could face immediate dismissal.
“We want transparency,” he implied.
Collina also revealed that any player who leaves the pitch in protest against officiating decisions—or encourages teammates to do the same—may also receive a straight red card.
“That behaviour is unacceptable,” he noted.
The FIFA official explained that the rules are part of a broader effort to modernize football and improve respect for referees and the game itself.
“These rules reflect the times,” he added.
For Collina, protecting football’s image is a priority, particularly on the world’s biggest stage.
“We must protect the game,” he stressed.
The changes have already generated intense debate among players, coaches, and fans, with some supporting stricter discipline while others fear overregulation.

“There must be respect,” Collina said.
