Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, has called for the urgent constitution of the 17-man board meant to oversee the affairs of the National Sports Commission.
Speaking on the issue, Shaibu stressed that the current structure is unsustainable, arguing that the chairman and director general of the commission cannot continue to manage the nation’s sports sector alone.

“They cannot run it by themselves,” he said.
According to him, the proper board structure outlined in the constitution must be implemented without delay.
“We need the full board,” he implied.
Shaibu emphasized that a functioning board is necessary for accountability, effective decision-making, and long-term planning across Nigerian sports.
“It’s important for governance,” he noted.
He also urged stakeholders within the sports sector to put aside personal interests and work together for the collective progress of Nigerian athletics.
“We must unite,” he added.
For the former deputy governor, collaboration and proper administration are critical if the country is to maximize its sporting potential.
“Sports need structure,” he stressed.
Shaibu warned that without the right systems in place, development efforts could continue to suffer from inconsistency and poor coordination.
“We can do better,” he said.
As conversations around sports reforms continue, his comments highlight growing concerns about governance and leadership within the sector.
For Shaibu, the message is clear.
Constitute the board.
Follow the constitution.
And work together.
Because strong sports development begins with strong administration.
