A woman has been charged with neglecting and torturing a girl who remains in ICU after almost three months.
The woman, a 40-year-old from Logan Reserve in Queensland, Australia, will appear in court on Tuesday, May 5. She has been charged with three counts of failing to supply necessaries and one count of torture.
The 10-year-old girl was admitted to Brisbane’s Queensland Children’s Hospital on February 9. She was suffering dehydration, critical malnutrition and significant untreated injuries.
The girl remains in ICU in a stable condition, Queensland Police said in a statement.
It has been reported that investigations are ongoing.
Police in neighbouring state the Northern Territory just days earlier found the body believed to be a missing five-year-old girl.
The girl, who the family has asked be referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby since her death, went missing late on Saturday, April 25 from a home on the outskirts of Alice Springs, in the Australian outback.
Riots erupted after police captured the man believed to be responsible for the abduction and murder of Kumanjayi Little Baby.
Her body was discovered on Thursday, April 30, approximately three miles from where she was last seen alive. That same evening, Northern Territory Police tracked down recently released prisoner Jefferson Lewis, 47, at Charles Creek Camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs.
Officers arrived to find a 200-strong crowd already “taking justice into their own hands”, Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said, with the vigilante crowd beating the murder suspect āwithin an inch of his lifeā.
