Phil Foden has reached an agreement in principle to sign a new contract at Manchester City, according to David Ornstein.
The England international’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium is due to expire in 2027, but he has now agreed fresh terms with his boyhood club on a new four-year contract, with the option for a further 12 months.
The formalities of the agreement still need to be reached, however both parties are keen to extend Foden’s stay at the club and an official announcement is therefore expected to occur shortly.
Foden is now represented by super agent Rafaela Pimenta and she has handled all contract negotiations with Man City, as per Ornstein.
The England star won the PFA Player of the Year award in 2023-24, thanks to a sublime campaign in which he scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in the Premier League, but his form has tailed off massively since then.
Foden was unable to replicate that level of performance last year and he has been demoted to a bit-part player this season following the arrival of France international Rayan Cherki from Lyon.
The 25-year-old has seven goals and three assists in 29 Premier League appearances so far this term, but he has only started two league matches from a possible 12 since being hooked at half-time versus Manchester United on 17 January.
As a result, rumours of a potential summer exit have emerged in recent weeks, but Man City are reportedly close to finalising a contract extension agreement with Foden instead.
Phil Foden to sign new Man City contract
Foden’s new deal will be valid until 2030 and he will hope to re-establish himself as a pivotal player at the Etihad Stadium next season.
However, it remains to be seen if Pep Guardiola will still be in charge of the club amid reports that he could opt to depart following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.
Former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who served as Guardiola’s assistant in 2022-23, is currently the frontrunners for the job, although Xabi Alonso is also under consideration.
Foden has scored 110 goals in 365 senior appearances for Man City and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €74.5m. This has, however, slowly fallen from a career peak of €177.3m in late 2024.
