Former Super Eagles defender Efetobore Sodje has thrown his support behind Nigeria’s push to recruit diaspora talents, while urging stakeholders to change the narrative around foreign-born players.
Speaking on the growing trend of attracting players born abroad, Sodje described the initiative as beneficial for both the national team and the country.

“It’s a good idea,” he said.
According to him, players of Nigerian descent—regardless of where they were born—should not be labeled as “foreign” when they choose to represent the country.
“They are Nigerians,” he implied.
Sodje emphasized that identity should not be questioned based on birthplace, stressing that commitment to the national team is what truly matters.
“It’s about representing Nigeria,” he noted.
However, the former defender also highlighted the need for proper structures to ensure a smooth integration of diaspora players into the team.
“We need a system,” he added.
He warned that without a clear pathway, blending foreign-based and locally developed players could become a challenge.
“It must be organized,” he stressed.
Sodje also called for increased attention to the domestic league, arguing that improving its quality will strengthen the overall talent pool available to the Super Eagles.
“We must develop our league,” he said.
For him, the ideal approach is a balanced system where both local and diaspora talents contribute to the national team’s success.
“We need both,” he concluded.
As Nigeria continues to refine its recruitment strategy, the debate around identity and selection remains central.
