Mohamad Salah’s destination when he leaves Liverpool looks “increasingly” like it will be MLS, according to a report.
Salah has announced that he will depart Anfield at the end of the season, with the Reds having agreed to cut short his contract by a year to allow him to depart.
Initially, a switch to the Saudi Pro League, which has coveted him for years, seemed a strong probability, but MLS is emerging as a viable destination.
Salah’s family have their say
Salah’s family are set to have a big say in the outcome of this transfer saga, and TeamTalk reports that the World Cup will be a key period in the decision-making process.
It is claimed that he has been holding talks with his family over his next steps, and with sources revealing that both Saudi Arabia and the USA are seen as “attractive destinations”.
Now Salah plans to use the World Cup, where he will lead Egypt against Belgium, Iran and New Zealand in Group G, as an opportunity for his family to discover the country and experience the lifestyle.
Egypt will be based in the Pacific Northwest, with two of their matches taking place in Seattle and their clash against New Zealand set for Vancouver, Canada.
The Pharaohs will train at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
San Diego hot favourites in MLS
San Diego FC is the MLS franchise considered most likely to sign Salah.
MLS transfer expert Tom Bogert explained: “If Mohamed Salah comes to Major League Soccer, I feel extraordinarily safe that it’s going to be San Diego
“San Diego has an Egyptian owner. It’s deeper than that, but that is the starting point. I cannot imagine a scenario in which Chicago, Miami, or LAFC gets ahead, either in terms of, like, if you want to see some money come out.
“I’m not saying that this is definitely going to happen, but I’m just saying that if Salah comes to MLS, I’d put a lot of chips on the pile of it being San Diego.”
San Diego’s Salah stance
San Diego’s co-owner Sir Mohamed Mansour has previously told TalkSport he would love to see the Egyptian line up for his side – but only in the right circumstances.
“I would think any team around the world would be interested,” he said in March.
“If I had a vote as a fan, yes, I would. But the decision… it’s a business.
“Sports today, people think it’s a ball and people running, no. We employ 180 people. So any decision that’s made has got to make sense. It’s got to fit with the style of play we have.
“So would we be honoured to have somebody like Salah and happy to have him? Of course, like anybody, I would be.
“He’s a great player, he’s a great professional, he’s maintained his athleticism and his professionalism.
“Of course, we have to see how the fit is with the style of play we have.
“He’s done amazing things for Liverpool. If you go anywhere in the Middle East, not even Egypt, you’ll see Liverpool shirts with Mo Salah on the back. He’s world class.”
TeamTalk claims that this tentative interest from San Diego is now genuine, although the experience of Salah’s family in the Pacific Northwest is likely to be very different to the one that they would have in California.
