Nigeria’s campaign at the ongoing 15th African Armwrestling Championship in Accra, Ghana has burst into life, with Inspector Nnadi Okechukwu delivering the country’s first gold medal in stunning fashion and setting the pace for a dominant Day One performance.
The Nigeria Police officer, competing with strength and composure, powered his way to victory, sparking celebrations within the Nigerian camp and drawing loud cheers from teammates and officials on ground.

Speaking to Sports247, which is on ground for full coverage of the championship, an emotional Okechukwu struggled to contain his excitement after the win.
“I’m so happy… I still can’t believe it!” he said.
In a heartfelt tribute, he dedicated the historic gold medal to the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as well as the entire Nigeria Police Force.
“This is for our IGP, for the Nigeria Police, and for Nigeria. Up Nigeria! Up Nigeria Police!” he declared.
Okechukwu’s triumph proved to be the spark for a remarkable team performance, as Nigeria surged ahead on Day One—winning six gold medals and securing places in eight finals in the left-arm category.
The strong showing has significantly boosted Nigeria’s push for qualification to the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt, with the team already establishing itself as a dominant force at the championship.
