Former Flying Eagles captain Ikouwem Udoh has criticized the Nigeria Football Federation for failing to properly prepare youth national teams, warning that the approach is damaging the future of Nigerian football.

Speaking on the issue, Udoh stressed that youth teams are often assembled just weeks before major competitions, leaving little time for proper development or cohesion.
“That’s not how it should be done,” he said.
According to him, this reactive approach has contributed to declining performances at youth level, which in turn affects the quality of players progressing to the senior national team.
“It’s affecting the pipeline,” he implied.
Udoh argued that there must be a structured system in place that ensures consistent training, monitoring, and development of players well ahead of tournaments.
“We need a proper structure,” he noted.
He also pointed out that the Super Eagles often receive the bulk of attention and resources, leaving youth teams underfunded and overlooked.
“The focus is too much on the senior team,” he added.
For Udoh, this imbalance is a major reason why Nigeria is struggling to produce the next generation of top talents.
“We must invest in youth,” he stressed.
He emphasized that long-term success depends on building from the grassroots and giving young players the time and environment to develop.
“It’s about the future,” he said.
As Nigerian football looks to rebuild, the role of youth development will be critical.
For Udoh, the message is clear.
Plan early.
Prepare properly.
And invest in young talent.
Because without a strong foundation, the future of the game remains uncertain.
