Manchester United have reportedly earmarked Aston Villa superstar Morgan Rogers as their “first choice” target for this summer as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.

The Red Devils are expected to sign at least two new central midfielders during the upcoming transfer window to replace Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, while they are also eager to strengthen their squad with the addition of a new left winger.

A change of formation under interim boss Michael Carrick has highlighted the lack of depth available on the left flank, and the club are keen to address this problem when the summer window opens in June.

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon and RB Leipzig youngster Yan Diomande have both been sounded out as possible signings in recent weeks, although Rogers has now been identified as their “first choice” target ahead of back-up option Rafael Leao.

That is according to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim that Rogers will cost at least double the €50 million fee that AC Milan are currently demanding for Leao.

However, despite their preference for Rogers, Leao remains on Man Utd’s transfer radar and they could reportedly lodge a swap deal bid, with Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford – who is currently on loan at Barcelona – and the aforementioned Ugarte all seen as possible makeweights in a deal.

But, Milan would currently favour a straight sale as they look to raise funds for a squad overhaul this summer.

Analysis: Would Morgan Rogers be a good signing for Man Utd?

Rogers has scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 49 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and he has once again been one of the best attackers in the Premier League this term.

Despite his talent, however, data analytics experts SciSports believe that Rogers is currently a worse player than Matheus Cunha, who plays in a very similar role to the England international.

Cunha, like Rogers, is best when operating in a No.10 position, but he has been shifted to the left flank by Carrick due to the presence of Bruno Fernandes in a more advanced role than the one he occupied under Ruben Amorim.

With Mason Mount also available as a player capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or as a left winger, Man Utd would perhaps be better served bolstering their squad with an out-and-out wideman, rather than a player like Rogers.

However, there is no doubting his talent and he would certainly improve the strength of the Red Devils’ squad if they are able to finalise a deal with Aston Villa when the summer window opens in June.
