Manchester United could find a bargain alternative to Yan Diomande in the form of another Bundesliga wonderkid who is tipped as one of the ‘biggest talents in the world’.
United are keen to sign a left-sided winger this summer and Diomande is believed to be the club’s top target for that role, however reports emerged this week that RB Leipzig could look to keep hold of their star man for another year, much to the dismay of the Red Devils.
With United set to be sent back to the drawing board in pursuit of top-level attacker, such a scenario appears to be emerging for Brighton too after they failed to reach an agreement with Koln over a fee for Said El Mala.
El Mala has been a standout performer for Koln in his first season in the top flight, with the 19-year-old providing 11 goals and four assists in just 17 Bundesliga starts.
Brighton, who are infamously known for being ahead of the curve when it comes to identifying world-class young talent, have been chasing El Mala for more than a year when the teenager was still playing in the third tier of German football.
According to Sky Sport Germany, Koln are demanding €50 million to part ways with their talismanic forward, while Brighton are only willing to pay €35m, and the Seagulls’ hesitation could be United’s gain in their quest to find the best value signings this summer.
Said El Mala: The Bundesliga’s biggest revelation
Capable of playing on the left flank or through the middle, El Mala boasts a unique profile of being quick and technical, while also standing at 6 foot 2 inches, giving him the foundation to succeed in a physical division such as the Premier League.
El Mala is in just his second ever full season as a professional but it was immediately clear from his 13-goal haul for Viktoria Koln in the 3.Liga last season that the attacking midfielder had ability far beyond that level, according to Bundesliga expert Tom Weber.
“Said El Mala has been the biggest revelation of the current Bundesliga season,” Weber told FootballTransfers. “The signs were already there last term when he won the 3. Liga’s Newcomer of the Season award while playing for Viktoria Köln before then taking this momentum into the U19 European Championship, where he was the tournament’s top scorer.
“The fact that he has been able to make the step up to the Bundesliga so seamlessly has been remarkable to witness. It didn’t take long for El Mala to show that he is FC Köln’s biggest talent since the emergence of club legend Lukas Podolski.
“That should tell you everything about El Mala. At just 19, he is easily Köln’s best player, and he has been a talismanic figure in their fight against relegation.”
How good can Said El Mala become?
Such high praise makes it perhaps no surprise that Brighton have had more than four bids rejected for El Mala in the last year, with Chelsea and Newcastle also rumoured to be pushing hard to win the race for one of the Bundesliga’s best performers and breakout stars.
El Mala’s value has rocketed over the course of a few months and Koln’s asking price reflects this, particularly with the youngster already having been called up to Germany’s senior side, putting him in contention for a place at the 2026 World Cup, which would only further raise his profile to a global level.
Indeed, El Mala’s rise to stardom has been so rapid that he may still be an unknown quantity to many outside Germany, particularly after being kept on a leash by Koln until December, by which point he had only made three league starts despite scoring five times for the Bundesliga strugglers.
“El Mala’s pedigree was plain for everyone to see, except perhaps for former Koln head coach Lukas Kwasniok, whose protectiveness of the young star became overbearing. His reluctance to make El Mala a regular starter caused bemusement and frustration. Paired with a downturn in results, it led to his sacking in March.”
“Had his game time not been artificially limited by his former coach, he could easily be on 15+ goals at this point, and we would be talking not just about one of the biggest talents in Germany, but the entire world.”
Why Manchester United is the perfect club for Said El Mala
So where do Manchester United come into all this? As of the time of writing, the Red Devils have not been seriously linked with El Mala but data analytics experts SciSports believe a move to Old Trafford could be the Koln star’s perfect move.
With United seeming likely to miss out on Diomande, El Mala could be a shrewd diamond in the rough for the club to target as an alternative and Weber believes the player’s attributes could make him a world beater in the right environment.
“What makes El Mala so dangerous is his unpredictability and decisiveness,” Weber said. “He doesn’t mess about when he gets a sight of goal. His dribbling, paired with decent pace, allows him to leave even the most experienced of defenders for dead.”
Although there are natural doubts about paying €50m – a potential record sale for Koln – for a relatively unproven and raw talent, the dividends could elevate any club and net them, at the very least, a handsome profit if handled correctly.
But for United, El Mala could give the club a long-term answer to their left-wing problem by securing them one of Germany’s biggest talents for a fraction of the fee of Diomande, and continue their goal of assembling a young squad capable of restoring the club back to their former glories.
