Rumours linking Enzo Fernandez with a summer transfer to Real Madrid from Chelsea are refusing to go away, and the player’s agent has revealed why the World Cup winner is often found in the Spanish capital.
Enzo has been unsettled at Stamford Bridge for several weeks and courted controversy when he recent said that the city he most wants to live in is Madrid.
His comments led to increased speculation that he is targeted a summer transfer, while pundit Gary Neville claimed that the midfielder was involved in ‘stitching up’ sacked manager Liam Rosenior due to his attitude.
Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid: Agent reveals the latest
Javier Pastore, Enzo’s agent, has addressed the situation and has sought to defuse the transfer rumours.
“A lot of things are being said… but the truth is, nothing’s really happening. He’s focused on finishing strong at Chelsea. It’s true he’s made some comments that weren’t entirely appropriate at the time, but he didn’t say anything out of the ordinary. He simply talked about Madrid, which he really likes,” the former PSG midfielder told AS.
It was pointed out to the Argentine that this has been interpreted as a ‘come-and-get-me’ plea to Los Blancos.
“Whenever he has a day off, he comes to Madrid because I’m there and because he has friends there. But that’s all it is; nothing more. The goal is to finish the year well at Chelsea, have a good World Cup, and then we’ll see,” the agent explained.
Enzo was spotted in Spain this week with fellow Chelsea star Marc Cucurella, with the players taking in the tennis at the Madrid Open.
What midfield role does Enzo prefer?
The 25-year-old has been used in a more attacking central midfield role in recent times, leading to Pastore being asked about how Enzo likes to be used.
“He’s playing in many positions. In the last two years, he’s changed positions a lot,” Pastore explained.
“With Maresca, he played much further forward. Then, with Rosenior, he played more as a holding midfielder. For the Argentine national team, he’s also playing as a more advanced number 8, getting forward to score.
“He’s had two years with a lot of assists and a lot of goals, so it’s normal that coaches see him as more offensive than defensive. But he’s a player who can easily play in both positions.”
