Chelsea believe Nicolas Jackson is worth €70 million as they prepare for the Senegal international to return to the club following his loan spell at Bayern Munich.
The 24-year-old was allowed to depart Stamford Bridge following the signings of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap last summer, and he eventually secured a temporary move to Vincent Kompany’s side after interest from the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Jackson has scored 10 goals in 30 games for Bayern so far this season, but he has unsurprisingly been unable to displace Harry Kane as the club’s preferred centre forward, and his involvement in the Champions League knockout stages has been very limited.
It’s understood that Jackson’s camp were optimistic that Bayern would trigger the €65m option to buy clause included in his loan move to the Allianz Arena this summer, but it has now been confirmed that a permanent transfer to the Bundesliga giants will not take place.
Instead, Jackson will return to Chelsea, before the Blues decide whether to reintegrate him into the first-team squad, sanction another loan deal or offload him permanently.
Both Juventus and Newcastle have been linked with a summer swoop for the 24-year-old in recent days and The Athletic now report that Chelsea will ask for €70m (£60m) to sell Jackson this summer.
They reportedly believe that his value hasn’t diminished during his spell at Bayern, despite the fact he has only racked up 1,152 minutes of action this term, although the west London giants will wait until they appoint a new permanent manager before making a final decision on Jackson’s future.
Jackson still has seven years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge and having scored 30 goals in 81 games for Chelsea, the Blues could yet keep hold of him if their valuation isn’t met.
Verdict: Why Chelsea should keep Nicolas Jackson this summer
There are several glaring holes in Chelsea’s first-team squad and with Joao Pedro performing well during his debut campaign at the club, the Blues are extremely unlikely to use their resources on signing a new striker this summer.
Therefore, keeping Jackson in the squad would be a smart idea, especially as his relationship with former boss Enzo Maresca is believed to have played a key role in exit last summer.
Liam Delap has endured a torrid first season at Stamford Bridge and with only one Premier League goal to his name, it may be wise for Chelsea to cut their losses and sanction an immediate sale.
Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha will arrive at the club in July, with a deal having already been agreed, but relying on him to make the step up to the Premier League instantly may be a mistake, meaning Jackson should be kept around.
The Senegal star is far from the polished article, however he displayed flashes of brilliance during his two years as Chelsea’s preferred striker and he is also capable of playing as a left winger if needed.
