Mason Greenwood appears to be dealing with controversy in Marseille after reported ‘friction’ between the forward and his teammates in a situation that could have implications on Manchester United.
Greenwood has been a key player for Marseille since making a €26 million move to the French side from United in 2024, with the 24-year-old netting 15 goals in Ligue 1 this season.
But despite being Marseille’s top scorer, Greenwood was dropped to the bench for his side’s 1-1 draw at home to Nice on Sunday, with manager Habib Beye insisting the decision was due to injury.
However, reports in France have now suggested that Greenwood’s absence was also in part due to ‘friction’ behind the scenes, with RMC Sport claiming that the player is being criticised by some teammates of ‘lacking defensive effort’ and ‘only thinking of himself’.
Tensions are said to have grown this week, with many players considering Greenwood one of the team’s problems, while others believe he is ‘privileged’ and gets ‘special treatment’ from club management even when he turns up late to training or ‘snaps’ at coaching staff.
Greenwood is reported to have sent a message to Marseille through his lawyer detailing that he was not 100% fit but doubts will now arise over the Jamaican international’s future at the club.
Why Man Utd are paying close attention to Greenwood’s Marseille future
Man Utd will be taking interest in Greenwood’s situation at Marseille knowing that they are entitled to a large portion of the fee if the player is sold, with some reports claiming their sell on clause could be worth 50% of any profit.
Greenwood has been linked with a move away from Marseille, with Paris FC the latest team to have considered a big money deal as they look to make a statement of intent under their billionaire owners.
Marseille, however, are only open to Greenwood’s departure for a significant fee that could likely exceed his €45.4 million Expected Transfer Value (ETV) given the sell-on clause, while the player himself is thought to prefer a move to a major European club outside of France.
Given United’s desire to strengthen heavily this summer, Greenwood’s sale could net the club around €20m – a not-insignificant amount that could make the difference in the pursuit for stars such as Elliot Anderson or Yan Diomande.
