Moment US hockey fans save the day as Canadian national anthem is struck by disaster ahead of playoff clash

The Buffalo Sabres crowd provided one of the most moving moments of the 2026 NHL playoffs on Tuesday after coming to the rescue of anthem singer Cami Clune. 

As Clune began her rendition of ‘O Canada’ ahead of Game 5 against the Boston Bruins, her microphone began cutting out, eventually leaving the arena in silence. 

Without missing a beat, nearly 19,000 fans at the KeyBank Center stepped in to help the singer, belting out the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem in a show of unity. 

The stirring scene immediately went viral on social media, with fans and analysts praising the Buffalo faithful for their class despite the post-season tensions.

Former ESPN host Ariel Helwani was among those who turned to social media and shared praise for the Sabres crowd. 

Taking to X, he wrote: ‘One of the many, many examples as to why I adore the good people of Western NY. All class, all the time. They deserve only good things.’ 

The crowd picked up where Clune left off and sang ‘O Canada’ before their playoff game

Meanwhile, one fan said: ‘As a Canadian it was heartwarming to hear and feel Buffalo belt out the last half of the Canadian anthem. We’re loving this run by the Sabres.’

‘Such a beautiful song and wonderful moment,’ another wrote on the platform. 

Meanwhile, Clune herself wrote on social media afterward: ‘Well that was interesting!! Thank you all for singing along with me. We have the best fans ever!’ 

Clune, a former finalist on The Voice, handled the situation with grace, continuing to lead the crowd despite the obvious audio issues plaguing her performance.

While ‘O Canada’ is usually only played in American arenas when a Canadian team is visiting, the Sabres perform both anthems before every home game due to the city’s close proximity to the border. 

The moment served as a notable contrast to the current geopolitical tensions between the two nations regarding trade tariffs and border sovereignty. 

The Sabres eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat on the night, however the evening will be remembered for the spirit of the fans who helped save the day in Buffalo.
