An 89-year-old man allegedly shot multiple people including four women, in two separate attacks in Kerameikos, Athens, today before going on the run
Police have arrested a man after several women were shot in Greece.
According to early reports the 89-year-old was in a hotel in the KTEL area and allegedly had a fully loaded 38 caliber revolver after previously using a rifle.
The man allegedly concealed his weapon as he reportedly shot four women and a man in two separate attacks in Kerameikos, Greece.
According to local media reports he allegedly entered the EFKA (Greece’s social security office) and shot an employee there before making his way to Loukareos Street in the Court of Appeals and wounded another four females.
Greek media have reported the suspect is an 89-year-old refuse collector, as cops launched a manhunt earlier today. Police made an arrest after officers swooped on the Patras area.
Officers from the Rapid Action Police grabbed the 89-year-old and he was taken to the Achaia Police Department.
A male patient, an EFKA employee, was transported to hospital after a reported shooting with a hunting rifle, Skai.gr News reported.
Subsequently, four other women, employees of the Athens Court of First Instance, were transported by ambulance with similar injuries, local outlets reported.
The president of the Athens Bar Association told Greek newspaper Proto Thema that letters had been left at the scene and were addressed to newspapers.
He said: “We rushed immediately after we were informed about the incident. Initial information indicates that it is an elderly man who, with a modified rifle, shot and wounded, fortunately slightly, four clerks of the Court of First Instance, all women. He has left some letters addressed to the newspapers .”
Reports suggest he allegedly forced his way into the EFKA building and travelled to the fourth floor. It was here he shot the EFKA employee, believed to be male. Eyewitnesses at the EFKA incident reported that the suspect “took out the shotgun from under the counter and fired”, while another claimed he instructed people to duck as he aimed at the victim.
He then allegedly took a taxi to the Athens Court of Appeals where he shot four women, all of whom have been urgently taken to hospital.
The suspect then reportedly left the firearm on top of a photocopier and has since vanished.
A trainee solicitor has recounted the events at the Athens Court of Appeals, describing how the man, who appeared elderly, entered wearing a blue trench coat.
They informed Proto Thema: “I was just leaving the Court of First Instance and I saw many colleagues running. A colleague came out and warned us that there was a gun and that shots were being fired.
“What happened was that an elderly man in a blue trench coat entered office 23, shot three times on the floor, left the shotgun on the photocopier and disappeared.”
