Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri is facing growing scrutiny in Marseille, and it raises serious questions over his long-term future in North London.
The 19-year-old prospect, who is still the youngest-ever Premier League debutant, left boyhood club Arsenal in January in search of regular game time. The Gunners’ summer business had left Nwaneri on the fringes of Mikel Arteta’s squad, so it was decided to send him out on loan.
Marseille managed to snap up the attacking midfielder, thanks in no small part to then-head coach Roberto de Zerbi. Arteta had personally spoken to the Italian and advised Nwaneri to head to the Velodrome.
It was believed that Nwaneri would benefit greatly from De Zerbi’s coaching, and he certainly made an instant impact. The teenager scored on his Ligue 1 debut in a thrilling 3-1 win over title-chasing RC Lens. However, Marseille are a volatile club, and it didn’t take long for things to unravel.
On 11 February, in the middle of the night, Marseille announced that De Zerbi had quit. He felt that he was no longer the right man for the job after crashing out of the Champions League and losing 5-0 to PSG in Le Clasique.
Nwaneri’s loan nightmare keeps getting worse
It quickly became clear that Nwaneri would suffer the most from De Zerbi’s departure. After all, the Italian was the crucial factor in convincing the youngster to join Marseille. Since the Italian was replaced by Habib Beye, things have gone from bad to worse for the Arsenal prospect.
Nwaneri has not started in any of Beye’s seven games in charge, and he has been an unused substitute in three of those matches. At the weekend, he hit a new low when he was left on the bench for 90 minutes in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Nice.
It followed quite harsh criticism from the French media and even Beye himself. The week before, L’Equipe produced a damning verdict of the wonderkid’s time at Marseille, describing him as playing with a “persistent impression of nonchalance.”
Beye insisted that Nwaneri was struggling to adapt to the “intensity” of Ligue 1 and that the teenager had underestimated the stature of Marseille and the demands that come with playing for such a “high-level” club.
In the build-up to the Nice game, Beye again took aim at Nwaneri. Even with numerous players missing the fixture due to injury, he refused to start the youngster. When asked about it, the coach revealed that it was a decision informed by Nwaneri’s underwhelming “commitment.”
“He’s a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” Beye explained. “Other players gave way more.”
Nwaneri could leave Arsenal this summer
Nwaneri’s downturn in fortunes comes at the worst possible time, given the rampant competition for places at Arsenal. The hope was that the talent would boost his chances of getting into the Gunners team by playing well at Marseille.
However, the move has had the opposite effect. Indeed, it is quite telling that Beye and Marseille would rather incur a financial penalty – as stipulated in the loan contract – than actually use Nwaneri regularly.
As a result, it could be a career-defining summer for the youngster. At this point, his future is far from certain. Arsenal have not made a definitive decision to offload the academy graduate, but there is a possibility that he could be sold.
Nwaneri would generate pure profit and surely fetch a handsome fee because of his eminent potential. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano did not rule out a potential exit when discussing Nwaneri’s future recently.
Last year, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea registered their interest in Nwaneri. Arsenal made it clear that the youngster was not for sale and handed him a new long-term contract.
Now, the situation could hardly be more different. It will be a fascinating and crucially important summer for Nwaneri.
