Tottenham are seeking to replicate the success they have enjoyed with the signing of Lucas Bergvall by sending scouts to watch another highly rated young player in Sweden.
Winger Zadok Yohanna has been touted as the ‘future of Nigerian football’ and Spurs were on hand to watch the 18-year-old AIK winger in a 2-1 defeat against Degerfors in the fourth round of Allsvenskan matches on Thursday, Expressen reports.
The teenager has been branded as an “exceptional” talent, and while he was unable to steer the game in his side’s favour, it was a broadly promising performance.
Yohanna: I didn’t know scouts were watching
Yohanna says that he was unaware that there were Premier League scouts in the crowd. At least two are reported to have watched him, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side one of the clubs monitoring him.
“I didn’t know there were scouts here,” he said after the game. “I’m just focusing on myself.
“Of course I have dreams. But for now I’m 100% focussed on AIK.”
‘He has everything’
Yohanna wears the No.36 jersey that Alexander Isak once wore with AIK. The Nigerian is a very different player, but those in Sweden are convinced that he will go on to have a career at the top level of the game.
“Yohanna is an exceptional player. I love watching him play. He plays like he plays on the street,” Degerfors coach Henok Goitom told the Swedish outlet, revealing that he told his defenders to double up on the teen.
“He is exceptional because he is a winger and you don’t think he would be good in the air, but he is good with his head. He is good with his shooting. And the more experience he gets, the more dangerous he will become. Because he has everything.
“He also has a cockiness: ‘Just give me the ball, and I will run’.
“I think that, if he keeps learning, that he can go to the top five leagues in Europe.”
Spurs’ Bergvall success could encourage Yohanna bid
Spurs do have a recent history of raiding Sweden’s top-flight, having signing Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden in February 2024 in a deal initially worth €10 million mark but with the potential to roughly double this fee.
Bergvall has been a roaring success with Tottenham, leading to rumours that Arsenal and Chelsea could make a move for him in the summer should Spurs go down. He now has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €54.9m, so if he were to leave, it would be at a huge profit.
The success that Tottenham have had with Bergvall will embolden them as they track Yohanna ahead of the summer.
De Zerbi is clearly eager to get Spurs’ business done as quickly as possible, with an agreement in principle already in place with Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi, who will be a free agent at the end of June.
