Como president Mirwan Suwarso has made a surprising comment on Cesc Fabregas’ future amid reports that he is being considered for the Chelsea job.
The Spaniard, a former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder, is currently making waves with Como in Serie A. After taking them back to the top flight for the first time in decades in 2024, Fabregas now has them challenging for Europe in their second season in the league.
Thanks to heavy investment from the Djarum Group, an Indonesian cigarette manufacturer, Como have been able to spend lavishly on recruits in a bid to bridge the gap to Serie A’s elite. Fabregas himself is a minority shareholder in the club, as is Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
Como’s goal is to become a “premium tourism destination” by playing attractive football. Fabregas has certainly done his part, with his exciting young team currently fifth in the table and recently narrowly losing to Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-final.
While Fabregas has a vested interest and close attachment to Como, it is believed that it is only a matter of time before he moves on to bigger things. Already last summer, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig showed a strong interest in him, but the Biancoblu refused to release him.
Fabregas to Chelsea? It could happen!
With Chelsea once again looking for a new head coach following the unceremonious sacking of Liam Rosenior after just 23 games, Fabregas name has naturally come up as a potential option.
A legendary former player like him would immediately command the respect of the difficult Chelsea dressing room, while he has shown the coaching capabilities to be successful at a high level.
Up to now, though, it was believed that Fabregas remains fully focused on the Como job and their battle for a European spot. However, the club’s president Mirwan Suwarso has now opened the door to a potential exit.
Despite previously fighting so hard to keep Fabregas, Suwarso has seemingly resigned himself to the idea that the 38-year-old will be on the way out sooner rather than later.
Asked by City AM about a potential move to Chelsea, Suwarso said of Fabregas: “If that makes him happy, that’s him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible, but at the end of the day, we don’t own him and he’s free to go to Chelsea if he wishes.”
Even in the event of an exit, Fabregas would be able to keep his shares in Como “as long as he doesn’t leave to an Italian club in competition,” said Suwarso and added: “Business is business, ideas are ideas. We have to see things in a way that makes sense, right? It’s common sense.”
Already last month, Suwarso hinted at a potential departure of the coach while speaking to Rivista Undici: “Fabregas is really very important for us, but we would be stupid not to think that one day he could go to Arsenal, Barcelona or Chelsea.
“If he continues to win with us or in any case to be successful, even if I cannot speak for him, I believe he could have bigger dreams. Having said that, I hope that as long as he is here he will help us create a succession plan also for those who will have to replace him.
“For me, when he leaves, if he ever leaves, he should be the one to choose who will take his place. He should be involved in the choice. Being a member of the Board of Football, he will have to help us appoint the next coach.”
