Chelsea considering three next manager candidates to replace Liam Rosenior after sacking

After Liam Rosenior was sacked by Chelsea, football.london has a look at three potential replacements the Blues are reportedly considering

Chelsea are considering Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Champions League finalist Edin Terzic as potential replacements for Liam Rosenior, according to reports. Chelsea sacked Rosenior on Wednesday, less than four months after appointing him as Enzo Maresca’s replacement.

His sacking proceeded the limp 3-0 away defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, which resulted in travelling Chelsea fans chanting “f*** off Rosenior”. For the sixth time, the BlueCo and Clearlake Capital ownership are pondering who to appoint next.

Former U21s boss Calum McFarlane will take charge until the end of the campaign. There will be plenty of candidates for Chelsea to choose from in the summer.

According to BBC Sport, amongst those are the aforementioned trio. Iraola recently confirmed he will depart Bournemouth at the end of the Premier League campaign.

He has also been linked with a move to Athletic Bilbao, the team he played for as a player. However, there will be plenty of suitors for the Spaniard, who is on the brink of guiding the Cherries into European football.

Meanwhile, Silva is once again being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. He was in the running to replace Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca, and the Fulham boss is understood to be one of the runners and riders now.

The Cottagers are currently 12th, but they are less than three points away from Chelsea in 8th place and will be in the mix for the European places. Then that leaves Terzic, who has not managed a team since he departed Borussia Dortmund in 2024.

He is the most accomplished of the trio, having won the 2022 DFB-Pokal (Germany’s answer to the FA Cup) and guided Dortmund to the 2024 Champions League final. In the 2022-23 campaign, he was also within one victory of winning the Bundesliga title, but saw his side slip-up on the final day of the campaign.

He also has an excellent track record when it comes to developing young players, having helped develop Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland while in charge at the Signal Iduna Park.

In addition, given the fact he’s a free agent, Chelsea would not have to negotiate with a club to bring him to the Bridge. Either way, the Blues will not make a decision on their next manager until the end of the season.

In their statement confirming Rosenior’s sacking, they also wrote: “Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.

“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
