Fabrizio Romano has announced that James Tavernier will leave the Glasgow giants Rangers at the end of the season.

Out of contract at the end of June, Tavernier will bring to an end his 11-year stay at Ibrox, during which he has earned himself legendary status.

A veteran of 562 matches for Rangers, the 34-year-old right-back has increasingly dropped out of starting XI over the course of the last season but will hope to sign off his time in Glasgow by leading the club to his second Scottish Premiership title.

Romano: Tavernier has decided to leave

Rumours have steadily built over the course of the season that Tavernier would not remain at Rangers beyond the end of his current deal, but now Romano has confirmed the news.

Taking to X, he said: “James Tavernier has decided to leave Rangers at the end of the season after 11 years at the club.

“Tavernier will be a free agent this summer.”

Tavernier: I’ll never shut the door on Rangers

Tavernier spoke to Sky Sports about the situation earlier this week, claiming that he was happy to stay with Rangers if that club would have him.

He said: “It’s obviously something that I’ve been here for a long time, and it’s something that I’ll never shut the door on. But I’ve obviously got to wait and see what happens.

“It’s a hectic life I live, so that’s something that will be communicated probably further down the line.”

His words would suggest that the call has ultimately come down to manager Danny Rohl.

Rangers to head into the transfer market

This revelation is set to push Rangers into the transfer market in the summer, with a new right-back required at Ibrox.

Dujon Sterling is the natural replacement for Sterling, but his career at Ibrox has been plagued by consistent injury issues.

Tavernier’s time at Rangers made be up, but having scored 144 goals for the Ibrox club, his impact will long be remembered.
