Manchester United will look to make wholesale changes to their squad this summer as they continue their rebuild in the post-Ruben Amorim era under a new manager.
Amorim was sacked in January and replaced by Michael Carrick, whom many expect to be named as United’s permanent manager after an impressive turnaround in his time at the club.
The Red Devils are on course to qualify for the Champions League and will look to cash in on a number of fringe players to bolster their budget as FootballTransfers takes a look at five players who could leave Man Utd this summer.
Joshua Zirkzee
Having made just four starts in the Premier League all season, Joshua Zirkzee is a prime candidate to leave Old Trafford this summer after failing to convince the club of his credentials since his €42.5m move from Bologna in 2024.
Zirkzee had offers to leave United in January but the Dutchman is believed to have opted to try and fight for his place in the team, although he has only played 31 minutes under Carrick and has no real future at the club.
A return to Italy is considered the most likely outcome, while Premier League sides such as West Ham have also been suggested, although much will depend on the offers on the table, with teams unlikely to afford a permanent deal unless United accept a significant loss.
Manuel Ugarte
Another player United will likely have to take a loss on is Manuel Ugarte, who is also expected to be sold this summer as the club look to restructure their midfield.
With Casemiro confirmed to be leaving upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season, United are hoping to cash in on Ugarte in order to bring in two elite midfielders.
While many teams such as Newcastle and Juventus have been linked, Galatasaray are thought to be pushing the hardest to sign Ugarte and United are expected to fast track the Uruguayan’s exit to fund their transfer business.
Marcus Rashford
United will be counting on every penny they can get through sales and one of the most lucrative departures could be that of Marcus Rashford, who the club have no desire to keep hold of.
Rashford has been on loan at Barcelona and, while the Catalan side had initially suggested they would take up the €30m option to sign him permanently, their interest has since cooled, leaving United to consider other options.
A deal could still be agreed with Barcelona as United are desperate to permanently get Rashford’s wages off the books and secure a fee as ‘pure profit’ for their books to boost their transfer funds.
Altay Bayindir
Alongside the midfield, United will need to sign at least one goalkeeper this summer as veteran Tom Heaton is set to retire, while backup shotstopper Altay Bayindir is expected to push for an exit.
Bayindir has played just ten Premier League games since signing from Fenerbahce in 2023 and a return to Turkey is thought to have already been agreed, with Besiktas believed to be the frontrunners to sign the 28-year-old.
A low-cost replacement will be sought for Bayindir to compete with Senne Lammens, who the club will continue to keep as their number one.
Andre Onana
United’s biggest problem this summer could come through Andre Onana, who is expected to return to the club after a loan spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Onana was told he had no future at the club after the arrival of Lammens last summer but the Cameroonian still has two years remaining on his contract and is one of United’s highest earners, with his salary set to increase if the club return to the Champions League.
While the player is keen to remain at United, with the club also needing a backup keeper if Bayindir leaves, the club are eager to get rid of Onana and will consider any offers they receive, although they may have to subsidise is wages with another loan as interest is thought to be minimal.
