A Nigerian-born American Football free agent, David Njoku has found his name mentioned among stars that were being impersonated by a former collegiate player, Luther Davis, who is now facing federal charges in the United States.
Sports247 gathered that David, a former Alabama University defensive lineman, has been charged for allegedly impersonating Njoku and two other National Football League (NFL) players to fraudulently receive loans in their names.

David, who was a member of Alabama’s 2009 national championship winning team, obtained almost $20m in loans with a business partner, using the initials of Njoku and those of the other two players initials to process the loan acquisitions.
The initials of Njoku and the other two players were identified in the charging documents from a U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Georgia, but their names were not stated specifically as the ones being impersonated.
However, a report by the Guardian in God’s Own Country revealed categorically that the three victims were ‘Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr., Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney and current free agent TE David Njoku.’
The report added that Davis is accused of giving lenders fake identifications with the players’ names, dressed up with a wig, a durag and provided a fake Florida driver’s license to pretend for in-person meetings.
David engaged in over $40,000 worth of transactions with NFL agents and financial advisers while acting as an intermediary between them and five college football players, but those transactions were against NCAA rules.
Sports247 gathered further that court filings emphasized that Njoku and the other two players did not have any knowledge of the deeds done by David, they were not involved in the loan applications and they did not authorize him to act on their behalf.
David Njoku, who was born on July 10th, 1996, is one of nine children born to Nigerian parents who immigrated to the United States, where he first attended Cedar Grove High School in New Jersey.
He committed to play for Miami Hurricanes, instead of accepting college football over offers from Boston College, Ohio State, and Temple, but last played for Cleveland Browns of USA’s National Football League (NFL).
The free agent earlier competed in high jump as a student, during which time he won the national championship at the New Balance National Outdoors during his senior year in 2014 and was selected by The Browns in the 2017 NFL draft.
