Saka, Timber, Calafiori – Arsenal injury news and potential return dates after Man City loss

Mikel Arteta could welcome back some players from injury as the side look to bounce back from a 2-1 loss against Man City

Arsenal were handed an injury boost against Manchester City, with club captain Martin Odegaard returning from injury. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes of the loss after struggling over the last few weeks.

The match didn’t turn out how Arsenal would have hoped, with goals from Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland seeing City come out as 2-1 winners. That result has seen Pep Guardiola’s side close the gap at the top of the table.

The Gunners will now be keeping a close eye on City’s mid-week match against Burnley. Should they win, then they will overtake Arsenal at the top of the table, but only on goal difference.

For Arsenal, concentration will now be on getting back on track when they face Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium next weekend.

The good news for Mikel Arteta is that he could welcome a couple of players back from injury for the match. With that in mind, here is the latest from the Arsenal treatment room.

Bukayo Saka

Injury: Achilles.

Saka has missed the last four games in all competitions after withdrawing from the England squad during the international break.

What Arteta has said: “Bukayo is out, that’s for sure,” he said ahead of the game vs City. “He’s just starting to do some stuff, so let’s see that progression, how quickly we can go through it, and then wait, but at the moment it’s not about that.”

Potential return date: Unknown.

Jurrien Timber

Injury: Groin

The full back seems to be closing in on a return, but was not included in the squad for the clash against City.

What Arteta has said: “Some players are quite close but the turnaround is short so we will try tomorrow to push everybody and if they are in good condition they will be part of us and if not they won’t. They haven’t been there in the last few weeks unfortunately.”

Potential return date: Vs Newcastle (H) – Sat 25 April.

Riccardo Calafiori

Injury: Foot

Like Timber, Calafiori could be closing in on a return to action soon, but was not included in the matchday squad for the clash vs City.

Potential return date: Vs Newcastle (H) – Sat 25 April.

Mikel Merino

Injury: Foot

The midfielder is continuing his recovery from a stress fracture in his foot, it is unknown when he could potentially return.

What Arteta has said: “Out again.”

Potential return date: Unknown
