Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted there has been “no real progression” in talks over a new long-term contract at the club.
The Hungary international has just two years remaining on his current deal at Anfield and it has been widely reported that Arne Slot’s side have been in negotiations with his representatives for several months.
Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers so far this season, scoring 12 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, and his form has attracted the attention of La Liga giants Real Madrid, as per speculation in the Spanish press.
Los Blancos are in the market for a new central midfielder and it’s understood that Szoboszlai is on their radar, alongside fellow Premier League stars Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).
However, Liverpool are desperate to retain the 25-year-old, while the former RB Leipzig star has also admitted that he would like to extend his stay at Anfield if possible. But, an agreement has not yet been finalised.
Confirmed: Domink Szoboszlai provides update on Liverpool contract extension talks
Speaking to reporters after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon, Szoboszlai admitted: “As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression. So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that.
“As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see. Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more.
“I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see. I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest – a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.”
Although Szoboszlai is expected to stay at Anfield this summer, Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah have both confirmed they will be leaving Liverpool following the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, while Federico Chiesa and Alexis Mac Allister have also been linked with exits in recent weeks.
However, the Reds are close to agreeing a new deal with Ibrahima Konate, and they have already announced the imminent signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais. A new forward is set to arrive too, amid interest in Yan Diomande, while the club are also expected to sign a new full-back this summer.
