Celtic should seriously consider a move for Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther in their search for a Kasper Schmeichel replacement, data from SciSports suggests.
The German goalkeeper is likely to leave the Rotterdam club this summer. Wellenreuther has a contract until 2027, and there is an urgent need for clarity. If the 30-year-old chooses to leave Feyenoord, he would be best off opting for a transfer to Celtic.
The Career Advice tool from data analytics firm SciSports reveals that the experienced shot-stopper is a good fit for the Scottish giants. Wellenreuther is given a good Club Fit rating of 81 out of 100.
Celtic’s playing style appears to suit Wellenreuther’s approach to goalkeeping, although it is, of course, currently unclear who will be in charge of the Parkhead club next season.
Celtic need a goalkeeper
The Career Advice tool calculates, based on various data points, the extent to which a player and a club match. This assessment is derived from aspects including the Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), playing style, level and projected potential of the player.
Various factors, such as development opportunities, chances of playing time, and the club’s playing style and formation, influence the outcome.
There will likely be plenty of opportunity for minutes at Celtic, should Wellenreuther opt to move to Glasgow. Kasper Schmeichel is currently struggling with injuries and recently expressed doubts about continuing his career
The experienced Danish goalkeeper fears that his current injury will force him to retire. Based on skill data from FootballTransfers’ algorithm, Wellenreuther would be an upgrade on the former Leicester star.
With a Skill rating of 60.5, the Feyenoord goalkeeper surpasses all keepers in Celtic’s current squad. Wellenreuther can therefore expect to immediately challenge for a starting spot at Parkhead.
Timon Wellenreuther’s skill compared to Celtic goalkeepers
| Player | Skill | Potential |
|---|---|---|
| Timon Wellenreuther | 60.5 | 64.3 |
| Kasper Schmeichel | 59.1 | 60.2 |
| Viljami Sinisalo | 50.2 | 53.9 |
| Ross Doohan | 48.8 | 49.1 |
Wellenreuther to leave Feyenoord
A departure of Wellenreuther is a realistic option. Journalist Mounir Boualin recently revealed on Transfermind that Feyenoord have issued an ultimatum.
The Rotterdam club want clarity from Wellenreuther, who has two options: extend or leave. The German has a contract until 2027, making a sale this coming summer necessary if he does not opt for a new contract.
He currently has an ETV of €4.2 million. Meanwhile, Feyenoord are already busy sourcing a new goalkeeper. In doing so, they seem to be taking into account the potential departure of Wellenreuther.
Raul Rangel of Chivas Guadalajara is being linked to the Rotterdam club. The Mexican is expected to cost €6m and has already commented on a potential move to the Netherlands.
