Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is aiming to get back into management this summer, and his dream job has been announced by the Spanish press.
Klopp’s last hands-on managerial role ended when he stepped down as Liverpool boss at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. The German cited burnout as the reason he decided to resign at Anfield, making way for Arne Slot.
He has not been out of the game entirely, though. He took up a post as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group, overseeing its development over much of the last two years.
Klopp sets clear target
Amid rumours that Real Madrid are sounding him out as their next head coach, Spanish source AS has claimed that Klopp is open to getting back into management next season. But his destination will not be the Bernabeu.
Instead, Klopp is targeting the role of Germany national team head coach.
AS reports: “If there’s a move around the Germany bench, Klopp could find the door open and thus fulfil one of his major goals as a coach, but the truth is that everything is on hold, awaiting developments.
“What seems clear is that his future and Real Madrid won’t be linked, despite it being one of the summer’s biggest rumours since 2014.”
Nagelsmann holds the key
Klopp’s prospects of becoming the Germany boss hinge on the future of Julian Nagelsmann. The 38-year-old continues to be warmly linked with a series of high-profile club jobs, with the former Bayern Munich boss notably cited as a candidate to take over at Manchester United.
Unless Germany endure a catastrophic tournament in North America, the decision is likely to be Nagelsmann’s to make, and this could hinge on what offers he has on the table.
With United going strongly under Carrick, a switch to the Old Trafford club appears unlikely, and that could mean that Klopp will need to be patient to take the one role that he really covets.
