All the latest Man Utd transfer news in one place, including updates on Carl Rushworth, Richard Rios and Morten Hjulmand.
Three ruled out of Man Utd manager race
Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed that the 44-year-old has been told by Manchester United that he is a ‘leading contender’ for the full-time job, while three other candidates have been ruled out of the race.
“He [Carrick] IS one of the leading contenders and has been told that,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “When he was given the job he was told it would only be until the end of the season, but United didn’t want to give him an interim title.”
United have also seen Luis Enrique’s become the latest name to be ruled out of contention with the Spaniard set to sign a new three-year contract at Paris Saint-Germain, while Gareth Southgate has had no approach and Enzo Maresca is also not in contention.
Instead, Jacobs confirmed that Julian Naglesmann has been discussed internally as a potential candidate by United but insisted that reports of talks already being held with the Germany boss are premature.
Rashford and Onana futures revealed
Marcus Rashford is said to be open to a return to Manchester United this summer, although the player is not expected to have a career at Old Trafford if he returns from his loan at Barcelona.
Rashford has agreed personal terms with Barcelona over a permanent move but the Catalan side are reluctant to pay the previously-agreed €30m option and will levy United to lower their asking price or agree to another loan.
According to the BBC, United will not address the issue until the end of the season but Rashford’s status as one of the club’s highest earners means that they will look to sell him no matter what this summer, either to Barcelona or elsewhere.
It is a similar situation for goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is on loan at Trabzonspor, although the Cameroonian is keen to stay with United and fight for his place despite having no future at the club.
Man Utd ‘really like’ Rushworth
Manchester United are said to ‘really like’ goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who has impressed on loan at Coventry this season.
Rushworth has helped Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League and the 24-year-old is expected to leave parent club Brighton in search of first team football.
Coventry will likely look to try and keep hold of Rushworth but United are also interested, according to Ben Jacobs, although Senne Lammens is still expected to keep hold of the number one jersey.
That would make Rushworth unlikely to consider a move to Old Trafford, with the Englishman only wanting to go to a club where he will start.
Man Utd overtake Man City for Hjulmand
Manchester United are leading the race to sign Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to Football Insider.
Hjulmand was part of the Sporting team that was knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal this week and the 26-year-old is said to be pushing to move to the Premier League this summer.
The Danish international was considered a strong target during Ruben Amorim’s time at Old Trafford and United have again added Hjulmand to their shortlist for the summer.
Manchester CIty are also understood to have considered the midfielder but their priority is to sign Elliot Anderson, who United would miss out on in the process, essentially clearing the way to sign Hjulmand if they wish.
Man Utd add Rios to shortlist
Manchester United are said to be among the clubs monitoring the situation surrounding midfielder Richard Rios after his debut season with Benfica.
Rios joined Benfica last summer from Palmeiras and is considered a standout defensive midfielder across Europe, which has attracted interest from Napoli, Inter, Roma, Fulham and United, according to Colombian AS.
Benfica have no desire to sell Rios and the player is also said to be keen on remaining at the club but an ‘irresistible offer’ in terms of finances and sporting prestige could tempt his interest.
However, United had opted against signing the Colombian last summer despite watching him extensively and it is believed they would only revive their interest if other targets appeared unattainable.
