Iran has threatened to take out US ships and trolled Donald Trump with a bizarre AI-generated video featuring the Minions. The Iranian News Agency, dubbed the “voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran”, posted the video on X which shows the US President as a minion counting down to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The post is captioned: “Trump: The Iranian Navy is lying at the bottom of the sea, completely wiped out – 158 ships. Unless we hit it, it’s their small number, what they call, ‘fast attack boats’, because we didn’t consider them a major threat. Warning: If any of these boats approaches our blockade, it will be eliminated immediately.”
The AI video shows Trump counting down to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabic Sea, but failing each time. He is depicted as a minion floating on a piece of wood.
The minion says: “I’m going to count to three. When I open my eyes, the Strait must be open.” However, nothing happens and an Iranian minion pushes a red button as “caution” tape drops over the passage.
Meanwhile, leaders of Japan, Britain, France, Qatar and the UAE, also depicted as minions, are shown on another piece of wood floating on the Strait of Hormuz. They initially cheer before looking anxiously over to Trump.
It’s not the first time bizarre AI images have been shared during the ongoing conflict. Trump recently shared an image portarying himself as Jesus which caused backlash.
The AI footage portraying Trump struggling to reopen the strait came after the US President declared it “permanently open” on Wednesday (April 15). However, Iranian state media claimed a crude oil carrier had passed through the chokepoint “without any concealment”.
The Pentagon claimed on Thursday that 13 ships have been turned around since the US blockade of Iranian ports on Sunday. Trump announced the military blockade after complaining that Iran failed to reopen the passage.
He said in a post on social media on Sunday: “The United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”
