All the latest Chelsea transfer news in one place, including updates on Victor Froholdt, Santiago Castro and Nicolas Jackson.
Chelsea target Froholdt
Chelsea have identified Porto sensation Victor Froholdt as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, Correio da Manha.
The Denmark international joined the Portuguese giants for €20 million in the summer and has been mightily impressive, which has attracted the attention of Chelsea and other suitors.
The Blues view Froholdt as a perfect successor to wantaway vice-captain Enzo Fernandez, who is expected to push for a transfer away if Liam Rosenior’s side fails to qualify for the Champions League.
However, Porto will not make life easy for Froholdt’s admirers. It is claimed that they will only sell the 20-year-old if an offer in the region of his €85m release clause is made.
Castro scouting mission
Chelsea scouts will be in attendance at Villa Park on Thursday to watch the second leg of Bologna’s Europa League quarter-final, as per Il Resto del Carlino.
The Blues will pay close attention to the performance of young striker Santiago Castro against Aston Villa. The Argentine has been on the club’s radar for months. If Castro is to leave Bologna, the Premier League is believed to be his most realistic destination.
A transfer fee in the region of €70m was previously touted, but that was before he signed a new long-term contract in February. The 21-year-old has scored 11 goals this season.
Chelsea’s Jackson mistake
Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel believes that the club made a big mistake offloading Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich last summer.
The Senegal international was forced out of the club and joined the Bavarians on a season-long loan with a performance-linked €65m purchase obligation that will not be triggered. He has struggled for minutes behind Harry Kane.
Mikel believes that, instead of rotting on the bench at Bayern, Jackson should be playing for Chelsea right now, given that the Blues have mightily struggled to score goals recently. “I actually think right now we are missing him,” he said on his podcast.
“What he gave us, no striker is providing right now. Yes, Joao Pedro is scoring goals, but look at what Nicolas Jackson offered in terms of high pressing and his telepathic connection with Cole Palmer. Palmer looks lost without him.
“Nobody is giving us that link-up play. Was he scoring enough? Maybe not. But was he giving his all for the club? Absolutely. My only issue was competition.
“I felt he wasn’t patient enough to stay and fight for his place. If he were here now, he would be the main man because he is certainly better than Liam Delap, who still needs to improve his game.”
