Liverpool have been sent a transfer warning over the future of star midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, with the Anfield club told that the Argentine World Cup winner could be one of nine players to depart this summer.
Mac Allister’s future has been the source of increased speculation amid Liverpool’s recent toils, with rumours that Real Madrid are interested in signing the 27-year-old former Brighton star.
The former Boca Juniors star, for his part, is said to have privately expressed a desire to move to Spain, and he may get that opportunity, according to a report from The Telegraph.
Alexis Mac Allister: Liverpool exit on the cards this summer
Mac Allister’s form has not been at the level that Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expected, and with a hefty Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) that sits at €116 million, the Reds are considering a big-money sale that could help fund major summer signings.
The Telegraph reports that he is a “surprise” name on the potential sale list but adds: “It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Alexis Mac Allister leaves Liverpool this summer to finance the next phase of the rebuild.
“The midfielder has two years left on his deal, there have been no renewal talks and his form has dipped. Clubs in Europe are interested.”
Mac Allister has fallen off… but not a lot
Data analytics firm SciSports would dispute the claims that Mac Allister is having an especially poor season for Liverpool. According to its model, he is among the leading performers in terms of Premier League central midfielders this season.
Not every aspect of his play has been flawless, though. His open play disruption and counter control both rank in the bottom third of Premier League midfielders in these areas, explaining why doubts have been expressed over his defensive contribution this season.
Mac Allister is perhaps suffering from the high levels he set for himself last term, when he was ranked as the fifth-best midfielder in the Premier League, but also from the outstanding form of Dominik Szoboszlai, who SciSports now regard as the best central midfielder in the league this term. In comparison to these two benchmarks, he has fallen.
Slot has dropped Mac Allister hint
Liverpool boss Slot has already said the club will sell ‘good players’ this summer.
“Much has been said that the club is in a transition,” Slot said after the midweek loss to PSG. “The club has sold eight or 10 players to make money to sign five or so very talented players. We have to sell to buy.
“We are losing some players on a free transfer. It is a big challenge in the summer but the club has shown this model works. As I said many times the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer.”
Who’s leaving Liverpool this summer?
Liverpool’s summer exodus will be headlined by Mohamed Salah, who has already declared that he will leave the club when the season is over. The Egypt international’s destination is unclear.
Similarly, Andy Robertson will leave as a free agent when his contract expires. Tottenham looks his likeliest destination, though a move to Celtic or even to Europe is not to be discounted at this point.
Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, Calvin Ramsay, Rhys Williams and Joe Gomez are the other players who could potentially leave Liverpool in a major clear-out.
Mac Allister, though, could attract a far greater fee than any of his club-mates, potentially fuelling a move for a high-profile left winger following the confirmation that Hugo Ekitike has ruptured his Achilles tendon.
