NATO fighter jets have been scrambled after a new brutal wave of strikes by Russia where children and pensioners have been killed in Ukraine.
A boy aged eight died in a drone strike on Cherkasy, which also left 14 wounded. A 74-year-old kiosk saleswoman was killed in a sickening attack on a bus stop in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine struck military targets including dramatic footage showing a FPV drone killing a Russian soldier as he walked beside a pond across the war zone in on the Pokrovsky front line in the disputed Donetsk region.
The Vladimir Putin fighter attempted to shoot at the drone from the 414th Madyar Birds brigade – but it exploded in a fireball throwing him backwards towards the water.
Russian strikes across Ukraine in past 24 hours included renewed attacks on Odesa region ports on the River Danube – just half a mile from NATO territory in Romania.
“Two F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force from the Air Police Combat Service took off from the 86th Air Base in Fetești, and the air defence systems were put into firing positions,” said a statement from the country’s Ministry of National Defence.
“Within a few hours, another group of drones was detected moving towards Izmail [Ukraine], and a new RO-Alert message was sent at 5:08am.”
Earlier Russian attacks killed five people and injured 27 in Dnipro. Harrowing scenes showed victims with blast injuries, shrapnel wounds, lacerations and fractures on the street in the Ukrainian city.
An emergency worker is seen assisting a civilian woman, 54, saying: “Just an ordinary civilian woman, nothing military… Film it, film it. Her leg’s torn apart.”
The woman says: “It’s been ripped off…. I can’t feel my legs.” Three more were wounded in subsequent attacks on Dnipro. Separately, Volodymyr Zelensky’s home city Kryvyi Rih was under savage attack from Putin’s forces, hit by a giant mushroom flame.
And Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv was hit with the Pechenihy dam was attacked by six aerial bombs in the Kharkiv region. Border city Sumy was repeatedly hit, with an attack on emergency workers working at the site of an initial shelling.
In a blow to Putin a military-linked gunpowder plant in Kazan exploded in an inferno in an unexplained incident. At least one person died. Enerhodar nuclear power plant town in Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia was hit by power cuts “due to an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces”.
