Greece scrambled fighter jets in response to planes ‘with weapons’ from fellow NATO member Turkey infringing upon its airspace today, according to Greek media
A NATO member has been forced to scramble fighter jets after another member state’s planes infringed upon its airspace, according to reports.
Greek media reports the country deployed fighter’s to intercept Turkish F-16 fighters and a single CN-235 naval cooperation aircraft.
According to Eleftheros Typos, five aircraft from Turkey committed infringements of Greek airspace in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean today – four F-16 fighters, two of which were carrying weapons, as well as a single CN-235 naval cooperation aircraft.
The local site reports that the Turkish aircraft were identified and intercepted “in accordance with international rules, as is standard practice”. No engagements occurred.
