Celtic could be set for a stunning battle with bitter rivals Rangers to sign Andy Robertson when the defender leaves Liverpool this summer, according to a new report.
Robertson announced last week that he would be leaving Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season after a nine-year stint at Anfield.
The 32-year-old is believed to be in advanced talks to join Tottenham after seeing a move to the North London side collapse in January, with a preliminary agreement still understood to be in place for a summer move.
However, Italian outlet Sportsmediaset have suggested that a ‘Celtic-Rangers derby is taking place’ to beat Spurs to Robertson’s signing, along with interest from Milan.
With Tottenham currently sitting in the Premier League relegation zone, Robertson’s agreement to join the club could come into jeopardy if Spurs do end up dropping down to the Championship.
Robertson’s former side Hull have also been linked with a move for him if they are promoted to the Premier League, giving the Scotsman plenty of interest to choose from as he embarks on a new step in his career.
Rangers looking to muscle in on Robertson’s Celtic dream
Rangers’ apparent interest in Robertson would certainly raise eyebrows given the left-back’s affinity for Celtic, having supported the Hoops growing up and coming through the club’s academy as a youngster.
Robertson joined Celtic as a nine-year-old but was released aged 15 after being deemed too small, leading to stints at Queens Park and Dundee United before moves to Hull and eventually Liverpool.
The 92-cap international has also previously admitted a return to Celtic would be a ‘dream’ and something that he wishes to do before he is too old to properly contribute to his boyhood side.
“Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it. When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park… as a fan you always have that dream,” Robertson said in 2022.
“When I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.
“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell.”
