Jamie Carragher believes that an “awful” Tottenham Hotspur truly look primed for relegation.
Roberto De Zerbi endured a nightmarish debut at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon, as Sunderland ran out 1-0 winners over Spurs – Nordi Mukiele’s heavily deflecting effort proving to be the difference-maker. As a result, the Lilywhites sit 18th in the Premier League table, two points from safety with just six games to go.
While many fans in north London will be hoping for a late resurgence under fresh management, Carragher has seemingly given up hope on the prospect of Spurs avoiding their first drop from the Premier League since its inception in 1992.
Speaking on Sky Sports in the aftermath of their loss on the banks of the Wear, Carragher said: “Normally a new manager comes in and you say it’s his first game, that has to go out the window.
“It had to go out the window for Igor Tudor and it’s the same for Roberto de Zerbi. Because of where they find themselves.
“I can’t believe it. Tottenham look like they’re going to go down. The other teams have something going for them. One point in 24?
“You look at fixtures, you think that’s a good game for Tottenham. But they’re awful.

“Do you think Tottenham will go to Wolves, bottom of the league, and win? No chance.”
De Zerbi signed a long-term contract with Spurs at the end of last month to replace Igor Tudor, who lasted just 44 days at the helm before he parted ways with the club.
The Italian is Spurs’ third manager this season alone, after Thomas Frank was axed in February following a dismal half-season run.
Given his contract isn’t understood to have a relegation release clause, the 46-year-old is currently looking at the harsh reality of overseeing Championship football for 2026/27, unless he can turn the tide with limited time remaining.
Up next for Spurs is a home clash with Brighton – the club in which De Zerbi spent two years of his managerial career between 2022 and 2024 – come Saturday, April 18.
A trip to Molineux to take on a rock-bottom Wolves then ensues a week later to close out April. Games against a high-flying Aston Villa, a resurgent Leeds United, fierce rivals Chelsea and a European football-chasing Everton make up May’s outings.
De Zerbi needing to inspire nothing short of perfection while depending on results elsewhere to avoid relegation.
