Police have shot the suspect and two people have been hospitalised in critical condition following a reported shooting and stabbing incident at Grand Central Terminal in New York
Two people are fighting for their lives after a horror stabbing on a packed subway platform.
Officers were called to Grand Central Terminal in New York, when a man allegedly launched a frenzied knife attack during the morning rush hour, leaving at least two victims critically injured.
Terrified commuters were forced to flee as officers from the New York Police Department swarmed the scene and opened fire on the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a machete and refused to drop the weapon.
Sources told New York Post that the violence unfolded on the busy 4, 5 and 6 subway lines at around 9.50am, triggering panic inside the iconic Midtown Manhattan station. Services were immediately disrupted, with trains bypassing the terminal as emergency crews rushed in.
An eyewitness told PIX11 News that officers were shouting at the suspect to drop the blade moments before gunshots rang out. “When I got there, police had their guns drawn and were yelling at someone to put the knife down,” they said.
Shocking footage from the scene appears to show a long-bladed weapon lying on the platform near the suspect, who was left on the ground after being shot. Other images show bloodied clothing scattered across the floor behind a police cordon.
The New York Fire Department confirmed two victims were rushed to hospital in critical condition. The suspect’s identity and condition have not yet been released.
