Sola Ogunowo, Chief Operating Officer of the Nationwide League One (NLO), has expressed excitement ahead of the league’s 2026 season opener between Flight FC and NYSC FC, set to take place on Friday at the McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State.
Beyond the action on the pitch, this season signals a significant step forward for the league, as the opener will be live-streamed using AI-powered cameras on a newly launched digital platform, marking a major leap in accessibility and fan engagement.
Speaking ahead of kickoff, Ogunowo shared his optimism about the new campaign and the innovations introduced.
“We are excited to start the season today (Friday) in Makurdi,” Ogunowo said.
“The match between Flight FC and NYSC FC promises to be an engaging one and will showcase the unique style of football the NLO represents.”
The highly anticipated clash is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, while the rest of the league fixtures will roll out from next weekend, following the recently released groupings.
Ogunowo also highlighted the league’s structured scheduling format, noting that the Stadium League setup is designed to ensure players get adequate rest while enabling better planning across matchdays.
In a move aimed at strengthening fairness and transparency, the NLO confirmed that group winners will now be determined via a single-leg playoff format—an approach that could raise the stakes and intensity as teams battle for promotion.
