West Ham’s win against Wolves has put Tottenham down into the Premier League bottom three and deepened their relegation worries ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge
Tottenham have dropped into the Premier League bottom three for the first time since 2015 after West Ham boosted their survival chances with a convincing 4-0 win over Wolves.
Spurs were aware that three points for the Hammers against the division’s bottom club would see them fall into the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s trip to Sunderland. And Nuno Espirito Santo’s side ended up running out comfortable winners at the London Stadium, with Konstantinos Mavropanos putting the Hammers ahead in the first half before Taty Castellanos’ quick-fire brace sealed the win.
Both teams created chances in the first half but it was West Ham who went in front three minutes before the break. Jarrod Bowen’s inch-perfect cross was met by Mavropanos and the ex-Arsenal man guided the ball beyond Jose Sa to give the Hammers a priceless one-goal advantage.

Despite a tense start to the second period where Wolves had opportunities, West Ham doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Castellanos. The former Lazio forward played a neat one-two with Pablo before squirming a shot past Sa and into the bottom left corner.
Two minutes later, Castellanos scored his second and West Ham’s third to all-but secure the win. Bowen slipped the ball into his path and the Argentine took a touch before burying a shot in off the post.
The Hammers were in cruise control and a fourth goal arrived in the 83rd minute. It was Mavropanos again that scored it to complete his brace, as he pounced on a loose ball from a corner to hammer home.
Espirito Santo’s men even created chances to score a fifth and put more misery into Wolves’ season, but the Hammers settled for a 3-0 win to see them bounce back following last Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leeds United and the 2-0 loss at Aston Villa before the international break.
It’s a result that has moved West Ham into 17th on 32 points, leaving Spurs down in 18th in the final relegation spot, two points behind the Hammers and 16th-place Nottingham Forest.
However, Roberto De Zerbi’s team do boast a game in hand and that’s in the form of a clash with mid-table Sunderland on Sunday at 2pm. But with Spurs failing to win any of their last 13 top-flight matches, alarm bells are ringing about the possibility of a first second-tier campaign since 1977.
