The Acting President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association (NFRA), Kelechi Mejuobi, has called on match officials to uphold integrity and professionalism as the Nigeria football season approaches a decisive stage.
With attention turning to the final fixtures of the Nigeria National League (NNL), particularly in the Southern Zone, as well as crucial matches in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Mejuobi emphasized the need for referees to maintain the highest standards of officiating.
Mejuobi, who recently assumed office in an acting capacity following the death of NFRA President Sani Zubairu, reminded officials of the late administrator’s enduring legacy.
He noted that Zubairu was a staunch advocate of fair and firm officiating, urging referees to honour his memory by remaining unbiased and consistent in their decisions.
“Our late leader stood firmly for credible refereeing. We must sustain that standard and ensure his vision continues to guide our conduct on the field,” Mejuobi stated.
He further warned referees against succumbing to pressure or distractions often created by teams during matches, stressing the importance of discipline, focus, and neutrality in all engagements.
According to him, officials must remain steadfast and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the game.
The NFRA boss also assured referees that the association is actively collaborating with league organizers to create a safer and more conducive working environment.
He acknowledged concerns around harassment and assault of match officials, adding that measures are being put in place to address such challenges.
As the season reaches its climax, Mejuobi’s message underscores the critical role of referees in ensuring fairness and credibility in Nigerian football competitions.
