Alejandro Garnacho has opened up about leaving Manchester United for Chelsea as he’s linked with another move this summer
Alejandro Garnacho has opened up about his decision to leave Manchester United and join Chelsea last summer. And despite any previous controversies he experienced at Old Trafford, the Argentinian harbours no ill feeling towards his former club.
Garnacho, 21, completed a £40million transfer to Stamford Bridge last summer following a falling out with ex-United manager Ruben Amorim. However, his spell at Stamford Bridge has taken a somewhat difficult turn under Liam Rosenior, who succeeded Enzo Maresca at the helm in January.
The Blues are presently navigating a challenging period following their Champions League exit and a succession of disappointing league results. Nevertheless, that hasn’t dented Garnacho’s morale nor his conviction that the west Londoners can bounce back.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, he said: “We know the team we have, the things we can do. Sometimes is better in some moments, and worse. But yeah, I’m really proud to be here in this moment.
“The life here is normal, and I’m happy. But yeah, at United [I] have nothing wrong to say about the club or any team-mates, no-one. Just a moment [in] life changed. My life continued. So we have to keep looking forward.”
Garnacho has found himself more out of favour since Rosenior took over at Chelsea at the beginning of this year. He’s netted just once in the Premier League this season, suggesting his move to the capital hasn’t necessarily been a step up.
This downturn is underscored by recent reports indicating he’s now a loan target for River Plate. While they are one of South America’s most esteemed teams, the fact they believe they could secure his services speaks volumes about his current predicament.
River Plate manager Eduardo Coudet is even said to have reached out to Garnacho personally in an attempt to broker a deal. TyC reported Los Millonarios are seeking a year-long loan for the player, a proposal Chelsea may well be open to.
Much of Garnacho’s difficulties at Old Trafford were rooted in his strained relationship with former manager Amorim. The winger drew the ire of fans with several public comments on posts that fuelled tension with his old boss.

He once shared a photo of himself donning a Marcus Rashford Aston Villa shirt after his former team-mate was loaned out. Additionally, Garnacho’s brother added fuel to the fire with some provocative posts about the situation.
The Argentina international was also seen as a disruptive influence when he publicly criticised the manager’s decision to drop him from key matches last year. Ultimately, it was decided parting ways would be in everyone’s best interest.
Garnacho still has time on his side to rebuild his standing at Stamford Bridge, with a contract running until 2032. However, it may require a spell away from Chelsea, at least on a temporary basis, to get his career back on the right path.
