Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hit back at reports that Julian Alvarez could be sold this summer amid transfer links away from the club.
Alvarez has commanded significant interest and is believed to be a top target for Barcelona, while Arsenal and Chelsea are also thought to be keen on his signing.
Atletico are not looking to sell Alvarez and Cerezo has been vocal over the speculation surrounding his star man, having accused the media of ‘crossing a line’ with their coverage earlier this week.
And the Atleti president once again offered an intriguing response when asked if he could ‘guarantee’ Alvarez would be here next season, replying: “Can you guarantee that you’ll still be alive at the end of the year?”
When the journalist replied that Alvarez has a contract with Atletico and the journalist has a contract with God, Cerezo replied: “Imagine that I am God and I will decide when he has to leave.”
“If a player has a contract with a team and many years left on it, tell me what could possibly happen. I’ll tell you – Julián has a contract.”
Julian Alvarez set for decisive summer after transfer interest
Alvarez has had a mixed season for Atletico this year with just eight goals in 29 La Liga appearances but the Argentine international is believed to be Barcelona’s top choice to replace veteran Robert Lewandowski.
However, the 26-year-old still has four years remaining on his contract and is considered a key player after his impressive performances since his €75 million arrival from Manchester City in 2024.
Alvarez is believed to have welcomed interest from Barca and appeared uncomfortable when quizzed over his future last month.
“I couldn’t tell you; maybe yes, maybe no, you never know,” he said when asked if he would still be with Atleti next season. “I’m very grateful to Atletico — the fans show me they love me, and I’m very happy here.”
Although Barcelona are keen on his signing, they may not be able to afford the fee Atletico would demand for Alvarez, which is believed to be around €100m.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have been long-term admirers of Alvarez and could pursue him this summer, although there have been suggestions that Chelsea could pose a stronger option for the player if they make a move.
