Liverpool have reached a “broad agreement” with Ibrahima Konate over a new contract.
It has been a season of very few – if any – positives for the reigning Premier League champions. Most players have been either directly to blame or, at the very least, impacted by the club’s downturn in fortunes.
This particularly applies to Konate, who has looked a shadow of his former self. While he has always had a moment of madness in him, the France international has looked completely out of his depth for large stretches of the season.
Indeed, such has been his fall from grace that long-time admirers Real Madrid have reportedly even dropped their interest in him, despite the fact that Konate could be available on a free transfer this summer.
His contract expires after this season, and discussions with Liverpool have been protracted, to put mildly. An agreement appeared to be close in late 2024, but discussions then suddenly screeched to a halt, leaving both the club and the player in limbo for over a year.
Liverpool reach Konate agreement
Perhaps Konate was gambling on a Real Madrid firming up their interest, or perhaps he was waiting for his hometown club PSG to make a move. Whatever the case, little appears to have happened on that front.
Consequently, there have been growing indications in recent weeks that Konate could extend his contract at Liverpool after all. According to TEAMtalk, this is indeed the direction of travel.
The report claims that a “broad agreement” has been reached between Konate and Liverpool, representing a major breakthrough in the contract discussions between the two parties.
An agreement on most of the financial details is now in place, with only minor issues still left to be ironed out. Liverpool hope that the deal can be wrapped up before the end of the month.
Tying Konate down will ease the Anfield club’s personnel situation and could alleviate the need to make another big-money defensive signing alongside Jeremy Jacquet, allowing Richard Hughes and company to focus their resources on other areas of the pitch.
