Chelsea could bring former ex-Liverpool and current Al-Hilal striker Darwin Nunez back to the Premier League amid growing uncertainty over Liam Delap.
The Uruguay international left the Reds after three mixed years last summer. Though Nunez won the Premier League in his final season at Anfield, he had failed to live up to his €85 million price tag due to his erratic finishing.
Liverpool decided to cash in on the 26-year-old and replaced him with Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. Nunez moved to Al-Hilal in a €53 million deal, but his fortunes haven’t improved in Saudi Arabia.
In February, the Riyadh giants pounced on the opportunity to sign Karim Benzema from rivals Al-Ittihad after he had made it clear that he was looking to leave the club over a contract dispute.
Because of the limited number of foreign spots available to Saudi Pro League clubs, Al-Hilal sacrificed Nunez for Benzema, meaning that the former Liverpool star has been unable to feature in league play since.
Nunez consider shock Nunez move
Al-Hilal’s decision left Nunez dumbfounded and incredibly frustrated. Unsurprisingly, he is looking to get out of the club as soon as possible. According to TEAMtalk, the Uruguayan is ready to make major financial concessions to return to Europe.
The outlet adds that Nunez has no shortage of suitors and that even Chelsea have been in contact over a potential summer transfer, confirming the rumours that have been swirling for a couple of weeks now.
While he is not necessarily a top target, the Blues are actively considering making a move for the 26-year-old due to the growing uncertainty surrounding Liam Delap.
The summer signing has failed to have much of an impact at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are not going to force him out of the club, but they would be willing to sell the 23-year-old at the right price this summer.
Emmanuel Emegha is set to join from Strasbourg this summer, but he too is facing question marks. The Netherlands international has struggled for fitness this season, so it is unclear how smoothly he will manage to integrate into the Chelsea first team.
As a result, Nunez could become a viable option to provide firepower at what is likely to be a fairly affordable price, given that Al-Hilal clearly believe that he is surplus to requirements.
