Arne Slot is edging closer to being sacked by Liverpool following the club’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.
The Dutchman guided Liverpool to just their second ever Premier League title during his debut campaign at the helm, but the Reds have regressed massively this term and pressure is beginning to ramp up ahead of the final few fixtures of 2025-26.
Liverpool have only won one of their last five matches across all competitions and a large section of the club’s fanbase have lost complete faith in Slot after back-to-back losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Man City.
Widespread reports in the English media have confirmed that Liverpool currently have no plans to sack Slot, with the 47-year-old’s job safe for now, despite the club’s woes so far this season.
However, Xabi Alonso has been widely tipped to replace Slot in the Anfield dugout this summer, following his Real Madrid departure earlier this year, and the Liverpool boss therefore faces a crucial few weeks in his career at the club.
Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League table, which would secure Champions League qualification for next season, however Chelsea are breathing down their necks, while Brentford and fierce rivals Everton could make a late dash for a place in the top five over the next few weeks.
The aforementioned 4-0 defeat to Man City on Saturday has intensified speculation that Slot could depart and the Dutchman’s future could be determined by the outcome of Liverpool’s crucial Champions League quarter-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
Arne Slot sack verdict
While Slot appears to be sleepwalking towards the sack, Liverpool legend John Barnes believes his former club should retain faith in the Dutchman.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Barnes said: “We won the league with Arne Slot and all of a sudden we want to sack him? If he then goes and Alonso comes, suppose Alonso fails in his first six months or first year, are we going to say sack him and bring somebody else in?
“I always support the managers, whoever they are, because they come to the club because of their success, because they’re good managers, and they have to be given time.
“Jurgen Klopp was 20 points off the top when he first came, but we stuck with him. So I think Xabi will be a great manager one day, but I want Arne Slot to stay.”
